Raising Healthy CattleBy William Testerman, DVM & James Carlson, DVMRaising Healthy Dairy Cattle: As one of our earlier domesticated animal, dairy cattle have been a human companion for maybe 10,000 years. Being ruminants they turn forage into nutritious products. A more marvelous food factory cannot be found. Milk, butter, and cheese are the more obvious products but there are others like leather. This 184-page manual was first published in 1995 and was revised in 2000. This book covers management, nutrition and feeding practices, along with a section on health and disease control. Reproduction is covered with an introduction to Artificial Insemination (AI). This book is a beginning point for those interested in dairy cattle production and an end result could be more productive dairy cattle. Raising Healthy Cattle (Beef and Dairy): In addition to addressing the informaiton above, this book covers the important role beef cattle play in animal protein production. The unique ruminant digestive system utilizes forage for food and much of the world offers marginal grazing systems on land not suitable for crop production. These feedstuffs would not be utilized were it not for the ruminants. This 175-page book was published in 2005. The book is intended to assist in understanding proper management and disease control. This small book contains a tremendous amount of information with illustrations and tables providing a comprehensive fingertip resource manual.
